I greatly enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Valenstein creates a smooth blend among science, social context, and personal anecdote. We learn of his experiences as the first American scientist to make a prolonged trip to the post-WWII Soviet and Eastern Europe. We see the challenges of Soviet individuals grappling with the constraints on their science. We also learn about the dominance of Pavlovian, and other state-supported approaches. The book provides a useful lesson about the perils government interference with the science and personal lives of individuals. It will be of special interest to students of behavioral science and its social context but should have a wider audience as well. A good read!!
